Morgoth The Black Foe by rinthcog Morgoth The Black Foe by rinthcog
Melkor was the most powerful of the Ainur, but turned to darkness and became Morgoth, from whom all evil in the world of Middle-earth ultimately stems and the ultimate antagonist of Arda. This scene is during the Battle of Sudden Flame, before he defeats Fingolfin. He holds Grond his hammer in his left hand but we only see the tip of its claw in this image.

Really digging the nebulae behind Melkor, as a way of indicating that he is the greatest Enemy in Tolkien's mythos. Also, I like the design of Grond in these pictures you've done!

Great work. I find that a lot of artists draw Morgoth as "monster-like", or as a faceless suit of black armor, but you have to remember that he's inspired by Lucifer, the most powerful and charismatic of Eru's children, who fell into disgrace. This piece captures his power and menace perfectly.

Thanks, I checked out that Sarevok guy and I see what you mean, similar to Riddick's eyes as well. They both have eye "balls" (rounded and solid), i imagine Morgoths are like little furnaces without shape, and change depending on his mood.
Every detail counts, thanks for the tip.

Wow. :O This is wonderful...I love the absence of the bright flame red that is in a lot of Morgoth pictures. It's scarier to have this muted look except for the very blue eyes eyes...it almost looks like he's just stepping right out of the smoke or shadow....

A great rendering of Morgoth!
For someone evil, many would pick yellow/red eyes, but I really like how you chose light blue which would traditionally be associated with goodness- so it looks scarier than red on someone like Morgoth. :)
Good job!

Thanks, the Balrog's and Sauron will have the red eyes, Morgoths Fire burns much hotter, i was thinking of a welding torch.

That's a good parallel! I wondered how it would be best to capture something (originally) fair and yet terrifying, and it seems your idea works best.
Once again, a beautiful Morgoth (okay, 'beautifully rendered and scary' gets closer ;) ), and thank you for the :+devwatch: !

And don't forget Namo! He's my favorite!

As for what Tulkas looks like; I think of him as being big, golden
and always laughing. Here's one great pic of him by Gold Seven

That's a good pic by Gold Seven, but i'm thinking more muscle.

I don't think that Namo's Halls have to be scary. Everyone thinks
of Namo as a grim scary judge, but there's more to him than that.

In the first place the Valar are majestic and beautiful.

"But fair and noble as were the forms in which they(The Valar) were manifest
to the Children of Iluvater, they were but a veil upon their beauty and their
power."

The Silmarillion
Valaquenta
Of the Valar

Also Namo is one of the Aratar; the eight greatest of the Valar (Manwė, Varda, Ulmo, Aulė, Yavanna, Mandos, Nienna and Oromė) The Aratar were greater in majesty and beauty
than the other Vala. So Namo certainly isn’t ugly.

As for him being scary. I think of him as a stern judge at times; but he is also a guardian of souls. The purpose of his Halls is to serve as a place of instruction and healing. And I don't think that a scary place run by a person who is completely cold and impassive would be of much help in that regard.

Also he's married (To Vaire) so there must be more to him than just coldness!

And one more item; the whole reason that the Valar left the Timeless Halls in the first place and entered Arda was out of love.So that means that Namo loves to in his own way.

That's good insight. Majestic, fair, noble, warm, wise indeed. Beautiful...maybe not as much. Its those souls and spirits lurking in the Halls that might look scary. But scary implies fear, which is subjective... i should leave the choice up to the viewer and stay neutral, like Namo himself.

He looks powerful, I like it!
I like the sturdy look of the armor, with the organic curves around it. His eyes and the background are amazing too, makes him look very mystical.

I just think he needs a bigger neck, it looks as if the armor is too big for him cause his head looks almost inside of the armor.

Anyway, good piece, keep it up!
